shuckcornWe’ve heard about the Cahill Gordon & Reindel layoffs, but haven’t found any reliable numbers.  If you have any solid information, let us know.

Further to our inquiry a few weeks ago, “Where are the Deals?” comes news that AIG has sold its Canadian life-insurance business to Bank of Montreal for $308 million.  Debevoise & Plimpton represented AIG this time around.  Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt represented BMO.  AIG still has about $109 billion to go to pay off the bailouts to date, not counting interest.

Barack Obama’s appointment to chair the FCC might not have BigLaw experience, but he’s got the next-best thing.  Julius Genachowski, after graduating from Harvard Law with Obama, went on to clerk for Abner J. Mikva on the D.C. Circuit, and then Brennan and Souter at Scotus.  He has had a number of legal roles, but lately has been a technology entrepeneur.

What About Clients? reminds you to know your client.  One of the tips it mentions is to track the stock price.  That’s no small part of the reason we’re testing the Wikinvest stock quotes – when a listed company is mentioned here, you should be seeing a close-to-live quote and a link back to Wikinvest for more information about the company.

While we’re doling out the career advice, Fortune has a 10-Point Survival Guide for keeping your job when everyone is getting laid off around you.

A student is auctioning off her virginity to raise tuition.  Bids are up to $3.7 million.  No BigLaw connection, but we saw how popular our articles that mentioned Playboy, Penthouse and the Skaddenite-in-lingerie were, so there you go.  We aim to please, but that’s about as risqué as we’re likely to get around here.

At what point do authorities rain on the virgin's parade and arrest her for solicitation? Or, at what point does the proposed John show up with a test kit to see if she is indeed pure?

It raises a whole host of interesting questions. Even if it's legal for her to do it in Clark County or wherever she is, it seems like she'd have problems with soliciting outside the county and the john would certainly seem to have issues with the Mann act or some other federal law. Iirc, it's illegal to cross state lines for purposes of prostitution (buyer or seller)… of course, that's based on no research whatsoever and only a vague recollection of Spitzer's troubles.
