shuckcornBitter Lawyer has an interview with BigLaw refugee Russell Wetanson.  After doing employment law at Proskauer Rose for seven years, Wetanson is trying to break in as the next celebrity lawyer talking head.  He’s building a brand for himself with appearances on E! and TV Guide Network and his blog, Popsquire (think Perez Hilton mashed up with law.com).

Scott Weidenfeller, a Covington & Burling associate (BA/BSME Rice ’96, Georgetown JD ’03), argued, but lost, an interesting pro bono case.  His client was a federal prisoner assigned to produce calendars for the GSA.  He copyrighted a design then sued the government for infringement.  His claim was dismissed and the dismissal was affirmed on appeal because the work was created “in service of” the government.

The Lawyer reports that Shearman & Sterling is representing the Shapiro family of Boston and its charitable foundation.  Between the family and the foundation, they lost $545 million in the Madoff scandal.

Wildman Harrold laid off 10 lawyers.  They don’t meet our definition of BigLaw, though, so we’re not updating the total in the tracker.  Convince us otherwise.

A former Skadden associate went out in a blaze of glory and made a whole host of claims in his suit against the firm including defamation, wrongful termination, etc.  After venting his spleen about the firm’s “stupidity,” he seeks relief in the form of job reinstatement and a promotion to counsel.  Well played, sir.
