Updates for 1/5/09

by law shucks on January 5, 2009

  • We’ve updated the layout of the Layoff Tracker.  There are some new charts and the raw data include inline links to the sources.  More revisions coming.
  • Carolyn Elefant, the guru of solo practice, is offering From BigLaw to YourLaw, as a free download.  There was also a seminar, but I got tied up on a year-end deal and didn’t post this in time.  It’s an interesting read, especially if you’re thinking about “Plan B.”
  • We’ve added a new category, Attention to Detail, under which you’ll be seeing new content regularly, starting today.  This has always been one of our biggest pet peeves (although admittedly there are many).
  • We need your help.  Comment to help build a community; send us feedback to let us know what you liked or didn’t like; contribute leads, links, tips, or even full articles to enrich our content; and if your eyes are bleeding, please! help us with design.  Beyond correctly formatting “WITNESSETH” with the underlines and spaces and whatnot at the front of a contract, which we can’t even do in HTML, we have no design skills whatsoever.

Carolyn Elefant's gives the impression that her "Solo by Choice" was a decision she had made by her own volition. Not so, around 2002 Duncan & Allen, a D.C.-based energy law boutique, told her that she wasn't "partnership material" and gave her six months to find a new job. It appears she whinged "I know that I am a good lawyer. I was good enough for you to hire two years ago, and I'm just as good now. No matter what you think, I am a good lawyer and … I will succeed at whatever I do". When six months passed and she still hadn't found any US law firm to employ her, Elefant decided to hang out her own shingle.

Why is that relevant? You either like the advice she gives or you don't, who cares how she ended up solo?
