For the fifth time in just over a year, Dechert is laying off personnel. AmLaw Daily picks up a Legal Intelligencer article (sorry, subscription required for the primary source) in which the firm reports 125 layoffs – 63 attorneys and “other timekeepers” and 62 staff.
As recently as December, a firm spokesman said there were no plans to cut any moer staff or any attorneys based on what they knew at the time.
Considering that was already the firm’s third round of layoffs, few people were probably feeling particularly re-assured anyway.
After the jump, a summary of the previous four layoffs and the firm’s rank on the Top 10.
One of the handy features of our layoff tracker is that you can search the raw data by firm, which turns up the following:
- February 25, 2009 – 10 staff
- February 12, 2009 – 19 associates
- December 17, 2008 – 72 administrative staff in the US
- February 29, 2008 – 13 real estate and finance associates
That brings the grand total to 229 people – 95 attorneys and 144 staff. That puts the firm in 10th on the ranking of total layoffs.
What do you think? Better that a firm overcuts in one fell swoop or prolongs the process in the hope that future jobs can be saved?
