So why were you in the unfortunate minority that got laid off? Was your name picked out of a hat or something?

yes, there are plenty of TTTs that still have BigLaw jobs, so? that doesn't mean that there are positions open or that firms are hiring. There are also plenty of Ivy kids or kids with better marks than me (and worse than me) who have been laid off (and were at more prestigious BigLaw firms).

I am so amazed that people are so amazed that lawyers are getting laid off. Are people stupid? Do they not understand if businesses aren't doing any business, then there is no use for business/corporate attorneys? People also glaze over when I tell them I'm a corporate attorney. They still think I litigate but about corporations. How do these people still have jobs and I don't?

Someone just posted on my blog that they didn't understand how I couldn't find a job having gone to a top law school and having been on law review. I don't know, because there are 10k unemployed BigLaw attorneys who also went to a top law school and who were also on law review....

We don't track small firms, but once in a while we note them in the "This Week in Layoffs" posts every Friday. Carolyn Elefant's <a href="http://www.myshingle.com/" rel="nofollow"><a href="http://www.myshingle.com/" target="_blank">http://www.myshingle.com/ covers that space remarkably well, if that's what you're interested in. Unfortunately, it's just not well publicized.

Inhouse lawyers are faring a little better, mostly because the first cuts corporate law departments make are on the outside counsel spend. There have certainly been some layoffs, though, both for straight cost-cutting and as a result of mergers.

There might be a way, but you'd probably want to get a legal opinion about your planned course of action first...and, well, you see why they are necessary?

Is there anyway we can shoot the lawyers instead of laying them off? These people are the equivalent of societal leeches.
