Oliver Stone and Michael Douglas have just signed up to direct and star in, respectively, a sequel to one of the greatest movies of all time. They’re reprising their collaboration in a sequel to the 1987 tour-de-force (at least to those of us fascinated by insider trading).
I read the announcement in Variety with excitement and delight, but then things turned south in a hurry.
Ever hear the joke about mixed emotions being your mother-in-law driving over a cliff in your new Mercedes? That’s what’s happening here. After the jump.
The plot line for the new “Wall Street” iteration has not been divulged, but it will pick up with corporate raider Gordon Gekko, the character for which Douglas won a best actor Oscar more than 20 years ago. Gekko’s larger-than-life presence will once again loom over a younger upstart looking to navigate the shark-tank world of today’s Wall Street.
See where this is going? What insipid young Hollywood actor could singlehandedly ruin a great franchise?
Shia LeBeouf of course! This guy has already ruined Indiana Jones, Transformers, and even Charlie’s Angels (he was in Full Throttle, which sucked, so I blame him).
One last glimmer of hope – Stone originally was planning to pass on the project, but Allan Loeb’s script convinced him to get the band back together.

Can't wait! Can't wait! Can't wait! The only reason that I specialized in public M&A while toiling in BigLaw was so that I would know how to launch a Gekko-esque corporate raid for my own account later in my career. I've got the know-how, anybody got the funding?
