Quick Shucks – 7/13/09

shuckcorn* We love it. The Law Times investigated the Canadian DOJ’s spend on outside counsel in 2008. Coming in at #1 was an American firm. Our pals at Weil Gotshal, which doesn’t even have an office in the Great White North, have billed $9.3 million, or just over 35% of the agency’s $24 million spend. (Presumably those dollars are in loonies) The firm is representing Canada in a trade dispute over softwood lumber. [HT: Slaw.ca]

Four more, after the jump.

* The Recorder is reporting that Tony LaRussa has dropped his suit against Twitter. They got that part right, but the claim that it “appeared to be the first legal challenge to the popular San Francisco startup” is off the mark. We wrote a few months ago about a BigLaw refugee who brought pretty much the same suit on behalf of some televangelist. We’re @lawshucks.

* Bitter Lawyer sat down with former NFL-er Tim Green, who is now a corporate lawyer in upstate NY who can wake his firm at midnight to deliver opinions that national firms are too scared to give.

* Hiring Partner continues to give spot-on advice. To those who don’t yet realize it’s a buyer’s market, he says (to grossly editorialize and paraphrase) “be thankful if you get an offer at all.” Actually, he’s more helpful than that, advising students to wait until they have some offers before they start ranking firms based on whether they’ve had layoffs or not. And they all have – some have just been more forthright about it.

* The Supreme Court denied cert. in the remote-DVR case we wrote about a while ago for the BigLaw involvement. Cablevision and others will continue to be able to offer hardware-free TV recording and playback.
