Layoffs in Vault 76-100

lawshucks-vault-bar-76-100Bringing up the rear, we have the fourth installment in this series analyzing layoffs at the 2009 Vault 100 most-prestigious firms.

Today, we’re looking at numbers 76 through 100.

Previously, we’ve done

Full analysis of the bottom (it’s an honor just to be ranked, right?) 25, after the jump.

There were fewer layoffs in the fourth tier than any other, although that may not be too surprising. The largest firms were clustered in the second tier, with some in the first and some in the third. The fourth-tier firms are mostly smaller, speaking relatively. So they had fewer people to layoff (and, frankly, they may have flown under the radar and been underreported).

Still, there were fewer firms laying people off, too. Only the top tier, where 12 firms laid lawyers off (including stealths), had fewer. 15 fourth-tier firms laid off lawyers, 19 in the second tier (V26-50) did it, and a whopping 22 of V51-75 firms laid people off.

So who are these firms and what have they done?

Of the 16 firms that laid people off (staff or lawyers), Locke Lord outpaced this pack, accounting for 14.3% of the total layoffs by the 25 firms. Seyfarth Shaw (11.1%) and Blank Rome (10.6%) were the only other firms that accounted for more than 10% of the group’s total.

In fact, this group was slightly more equitable than average, with lawyers accounting for 47% of the layoffs, compared to the usual 40%.

V76-100 account for:

944 of 13,232 total layoffs (7.11%)
444 of 5,190 attorney layoffs (8.55%)
500 of 8,042 staff layoffs (6.21%)

Come back tomorrow for a recap of the entire Vault 100 aggregated and comparisons among the tiers.
