Lawyers Don’t Fare Well on Fortune Gunners List

logo-fortune“Meet business’s hottest young rising stars. They’re innovators, value creators, and agents of change.”

That’s Fortune’s lede to this year’s “40 under 40” list. Apparently, lawyers need not apply.

We found one (non-practicing) lawyer, a lawyer’s fiancee (who has been featured here before), and some even less-closely related people.

The stories after the jump (plus bonus coverage from the “8 over 80″ list).

The best we have to offer from the legal community is Kevin Warsh, who comes in at #20 on the list.

Warsh is a sickeningly overachieving gunner who makes us all look bad. Just look at his official bio from the Federal Freaking Reserve where he’s a member of the board of governors.

Kevin M. Warsh took office on February 24, 2006, to fill an unexpired term ending January 31, 2018.

Prior to his appointment to the Board, Mr. Warsh served as Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy and as Executive Secretary of the National Economic Council from 2002 until February 2006. His primary areas of responsibility included domestic finance, banking, securities, and consumer protection. He advised the President and senior administration officials on issues related to the U.S. economy and capital markets. Mr. Warsh participated in the President’s Working Group on Financial Markets and served as the administration’s chief liaison to the independent financial regulatory agencies.

From 1995 to 2002, Mr. Warsh was a member of the Mergers & Acquisitions Department of Morgan Stanley & Co., in New York, serving as Vice President and Executive Director. He served as financial adviser to numerous companies across a range of industry sectors, including manufacturing, basic materials, professional services, and technology. In that capacity, Mr. Warsh structured capital markets transactions and facilitated fixed income and equity financings.

Mr. Warsh was born in April 1970 in Albany, New York. He received an A.B. in public policy (honors) from Stanford University in 1992 with an emphasis in economics. Mr. Warsh studied law, economics, and regulatory policy at Harvard Law School, receiving a J.D. (cum laude) in 1995. He also studied market economics and capital markets at Harvard Business School and MIT’s Sloan School of Management.

As if that weren’t enough to make you feel insecure, he’s married to Jane Lauder of Estee Lauder fame. Daddy Ron is reportedly worth $3 billion.

But lawyers do get a measure of revenge. Following Warsh on the list is Marissa Mayer of Google. HER husband-to-be is a lawyer, as we’ve reported previously (their engagement, and the story of how she keeps him up at night). The lucky fellow is Zack Bogue, formerly of Wilson Sonsini and now of Virtual Law Partners.

After that, it’s pretty slim pickin’s. There’s Charles Best at #35, who created Donor’s Choose, which we recently encouraged you to contribute to. Other than that, it’s just a bunch of people we’ll all be doing deals for.

Bonus: From the 8 over 80 there’s another non-practicing lawyer who has been featured in these pages several times before: Viacom’s Sumner Redstone. Two wellsprings of M&A and litigation work over the years also made the list: T. Boone Pickens and Kirk Kerkorian.
