Taking the Lateral Tracker out for a Spin

by law shucks on February 4, 2010

A question we’ve been asked a number of times since announcing the Law Shucks Lateral Tracker is, "What are you going to do with that data?"

The short answer is, we’re going to pick it apart and make pretty charts out of it, just like we’ve been doing with layoffs.

But there are some even cooler things we can do.

After the jump, a sample: an interactive network diagram of the laterals from January 2010.

We’re taking the IBM Many Eyes (every time we read that name, we can’t help but think of "20 Eyes" by The Misfits (link is to live performance from 1982 btw)) project for a spin. It allows for all sorts of visualizations of different data types.

First up, a network visualization of all the moves in which a lawyer left one AmLaw 100 firm for another. All of these moves come right out of the Lateral Tracker, so that’s why we need your help with submissions. We used just 79 of the month’s 121 entries to keep the graph from getting too complicated.

That should be fully interactive. Just click on it to activate the controls. You can scroll and pan around and zoom in. Arrows show which way people went, and the size of the circle indicates the number of people coming and going. Click on a firm to highlight it and see the other firms to which it is connected.

Stay tuned, we’ve got a lot more interesting presentations planned. If you have any suggestions or requests, let us know.

Let us know what you think, and don’t forget to get those entries in! The deadline has been extended to Friday, February 5.

Without this data, we won’t be able to determine what all the lawyers are doing out there. You are doing a service for the legal community.
