Top Posts for January '10

by law shucks on February 8, 2010

Below are our top posts for January. As usual, we don’t include our regular features like This Week in Layoffs and The Month in Layoffs in the Top 10 posts for the month.

10. BigLaw Gangs up on NYS Legislature – 51 firms are trying to present a consolidated front against the New York legislature on recently passed legislation pertaining to powers of attorney and certificated securities. Really, it’s just interesting because (a) so many of the firms aren’t from New York, and (b) we previously noted that an exclusive clique of seven firms had joined together on an SEC comment letter.

The rest of the best, after the jump.

9. Don’t Brag About Diligence You Don’t Do – Due diligence was a recurring theme last month. In this spin, Fairfield Greenwich Group was back in court, seemingly defending itself from fraud charges by painting itself as a victim – despite selling itself as deep divers on due diligence.

8. Apple Merry-go-Round Keeps Spinning – Four months after we sorted out the merry-go-round at the top of the legal department, Apple lost its top corporate lawyer.

7. CEO Blames Lawyers for Company’s Bankruptcy – He’s blaming Wilson Sonsini for not uncovering the fraud in his own company’s financial statements. It was actually a former WSGR lawyer whose inquiry led to uncovering an amazing fraud.

6. The Boor of Baker & McKenzie – When a plaintiffs’ lawyer was recently suspended from the bar, it reminded us of how he got famous for beating Baker & McKenzie in a sexual harassment suit for the ages.

5. Poker Pro/Law Grad Fighting Familiar BigLaw Foe – Dutch Boyd ain’t scared of Greenberg Traurig. Not only did he give us a copy of his answer and counter-claim, but he also let us know that he’s fought the firm before (and won).

4. Catching Up With Med School Drop-Out/Suspended Lawyer/B-School Student Loren Friedman – Even though that post was more current, our original post on the subject from last April actually got more pageviews. People just can’t seem to get enough of this guy. Being the first source to post a picture of him certainly helped with the traffic (thanks, commenters!)

3. Pretty Shallow at the Deep End – Our first attempt to find a few nice things to say about ABC’s take on BigLaw. It’s not easy.

2. Announcing the Law Shucks Lateral Tracker – The big announcement of our first custom application.

1. The Year in Law Firm Layoffs – 2009 – Not surprisingly, our look back was the number one post for the month, by a mile. It’s been picked up by a slew of other outlets, mainstream and niche. If you’ve somehow missed it, it’s worth checking out.
