Domain-name disputes can be a nice training ground. Not too long ago, a Fenwick associate won one for Google.
The domain at issue here was “flicker.com,” which Yahoo! had been trying to get for years for its Flickr service. The domain was originally owned by a beer company, who later sold it to a domain profiteer. The address apparently got tons of traffic from people mistyping the Flickr URL.
Three years ago the owners turned down a $600,000 offer.
Last year, lawyers from Finnegan Henderson and inhouse counsel filed an anti-cybersquatting suit, which has now been settled for an undisclosed amount.
The lawyers on the original complaint are Scott Mosko, a Palo Alto partner, David Kelly, a Washington, DC partner, and Stephanie Bald, a DC associate.
Inhouse counsel was Jonathan Matkowski, who has recently moved on to Sands Casino, according to his LinkedIn profile.
