- lawjobs.com Career Center – Did Fried Frank Discriminate Against Older Secretaries? – It looks like this brings to at least four the total of current discrimination suits the firm is facing. Two secretaries have made age discrimination claims, a document specialist sued for race discrimination and pay practices, and Julie Kamps, who is well known in these pages, has the pending sexual-orientation suit pending. Bettina Plevan of Proskauer is defending "at least one other employment discrimination case [other than the latest suit by Judith Cuttler]," which may or may not be the Kamps suit.
- Law.com – N.Y. Appellate Panel Rules Kasowitz Did Not Defame Former Partner – There's not much worse than having your defamation suit thrown out because the judge finds the statements were "substantially true." Unafraid of further reputational harm from continuing, now-solo IP lawyer Jeremy Pitcock will appeal the affirmation of the dismissal of his suits against his former firm.
- Law Firm at the Center of SEC Revolving Door Investigation – Who could it be? ALD mentions ties to Venable, Wilmer Hale, and Arnold & Porter. Put your best guesses in the comments.
- Alaska’s pension suit settled for $500M – Juneau Empire – Paul Weiss is set to get about $90 million in contingency fees. Even after paying the sanctions referenced previously, this is a nice bit of change.
- Judge Refuses to Toss Fraud Charges Against Quinn Emanuel over Legal Fees – Oof. Fraud is worse than the usual counterclaim for malpractice. This is also another example of the mind-boggling incompetence of firms when it comes to budgeting and their complete disdain for the process. QE quoted $4-5 million and came in at $15. What kind of way to run a business is that? Gibson Dunn is counsel to QE. Wiley Rein represents Tele Atlas, the plaintiff.
