Despite the grief we give them about general corporate rankings, we still use Wachtell as the canary for rankings. If they’re not #1 in M&A, and Weil Gotshal isn’t #1 for bankruptcy, the rankings are flawed.
Say hello to US News & World Report‘s half-assed effort.
First of all, tiers suck. They’re a lame way of making sure no one’s feelings are hurt.
Then it leads to odd results like M&A, where Foley & Lardner shows up at the top of the list and Wachtell is but one of the 10 firms on the second page of rankings of other firms also in the top tier.
The bankruptcy list looks equally foolish, because you have to click a couple of times to get to Weil Gotshal. Instead you’re presented with a top two of Bingham and Kramer Levin. At least Greenberg Traurig makes the front page – we think they’ve been underrated lately.
Anyway, the rankings suck and we’ll go back to ignoring them. At least Vault passed the smell test.
